CAMETÁ, PARÁ, BRAZIL — A high school teacher survived a physical assault inside a classroom on the evening of September 11, 2026, after a student attacked her with a knife following an academic evaluation session. The event occurred at the Dr. Gerson dos Santos Peres State Senior High School, located in the central zone of the municipality of Cametá, in the northeastern region of Pará State.
According to official reports and security camera footage installed inside the classroom, the mathematics teacher, identified as Betânia Almeida Prestes, was reviewing and handing back exam scores to a third-year high school student of the night shift. Moments after receiving her grade, the underage student pulled out a concealed hunting knife and struck the educator in the back. A brief physical struggle ensued as Prestes defended herself, eventually gaining enough separation to leave the classroom and seek immediate aid from school staff.
Following the altercation, the student discarded the weapon in a trash container inside the facility before departing the immediate area. Institution officials quickly alerted the Military Police, who responded to the scene, recovered the knife, and apprehended the teenager. Under Brazilian legal protocols protecting minors, her identity has not been publicly released.
The adolescent was transferred to the Civil Police Station in Cametá accompanied by her mother and representatives from the local Guardianship Council. During questioning, police authorities noted that the student admitted to inflicting the injury, stating a personal dislike toward the instructor rather than citing a specific dispute over academic marks, although preliminary inquiries had pointed to tensions regarding test results.

After receiving appropriate care, she was discharged on September 12, 2026, to recover at home while receiving psychological support coordinated by the State Secretariat of Education (Seduc).

On September 14, 2026, members of the student union organized a peaceful march through the primary avenues of Cametá. Carrying banners and signs, students and local residents called for enhanced security protocols within academic spaces and greater support for teaching staff.
