The event took place right in front of residence number 295, located in Hiền Tây village, Quảng Bình commune, within the Thanh Hóa province of Vietnam. At approximately 8:20 AM local time, a large dried mahogany tree collapsed onto the active roadway while being cut down, resulting in the immediate death of a passing motorist.
According to preliminary local reports, the property owner, identified as Nguyễn Quang H., hired a local worker to fell the large, dead tree that had been standing in front of his home adjacent to the main road, posing a potential hazard to the immediate surroundings. The hired individual, identified as 43-year-old Nguyễn Quang Thọ, a fellow resident of Hiền Tây village, initiated the cutting process without establishing adequate traffic safety measures, such as proper signage, formal road closures, or complete detours for commuters.
During the cutting work, the tree unexpectedly collapsed across the lane just as 67-year-old resident Lê Đình Thành, from Mậu Xương village, was passing through the area on his motorcycle, bearing registration plate 36BB-036.xx. The falling branches struck the motorist directly, causing him to crash violently onto the pavement. Although nearby residents immediately rushed the victim to the local Quảng Lưu health station for emergency medical treatment, he succumbed to his severe injuries shortly after arrival.
Dashcam footage retrieved from a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction showed a individual standing on the road attempting to wave down approaching traffic; however, vehicles continued to pass, and the timber fell precisely as the victim navigated the section.
Following the event, the Quảng Bình commune police summoned worker Nguyễn Quang Thọ to assist in clarifying the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Law enforcement authorities, alongside forensic experts from the Thanh Hóa Provincial Police and the Area 2 People's Procuracy, conducted a comprehensive crime scene inspection to gather evidence and complete initial procedures.
